A client wants one photo tonight

It is 11 PM, the card is still in the reader, and the text arrives: "Any chance we could get just one for tonight?" The honest answer used to be no, because one frame meant an import, a catalog, an edit and an export. It does not anymore. Here is the sixty second version, and the part that matters more, which is how to say yes without opening the door to twenty.

01 · THE ROUTINE

The sixty seconds

Open Kepla's RAW to JPG converter in a tab. Drop the folder, or the twenty frames you think it is in. Every one shows its camera preview in under a second, so you are looking at the card immediately, no import. Click the frame, check it at 100%, check the histogram. Choose camera preview if the camera's look is right, or develop it and nudge exposure if it is not. Set long edge to 2048 for a phone, quality 90, keep camera info on. Download. AirDrop or text it. That is the minute, and none of it touched Lightroom or your catalog. Sneak peeks before the reception ends is the same move earlier in the night.

02 · THE FRAME

Which frame

Not the best frame. The safe one: sharp, eyes open, exposure inside the histogram, a moment that reads without context. The best frame of the day is the one you will find in the edit next week, with time and a second look; sending it tonight at a lower standard than your gallery is how "just one" costs you the reveal. Pick the frame that will look like a gift tonight and a warm up next week.

03 · THE LOOK

Camera look or neutral

The camera preview inside the RAW is the frame with your Picture Style or Film Simulation applied, which for most photographers is closer to their final look than a neutral develop. If the exposure was right, send that; it is instant and it is exactly what you saw on the back of the camera. Develop the file only when the preview is too small to send (many Sony, Olympus and Panasonic bodies embed a preview under 2,000 pixels) or when the frame needs a stop of exposure or a white balance fix. Even then, the sliders are for correction, not style. Style is the edit, and the edit is next week. What is inside your RAW covers the preview sizes by brand.

04 · THE FILE

What to send, and how

2048 on the long edge at quality 90 is under a megabyte, looks right on every phone, and is small enough that it will not be printed. Keep the camera info on; the file still says which body and lens made it, which is quietly good for you. GPS is never copied by the tool, so the coordinates of the getting ready house do not travel with the frame. Send it the way they will share it: AirDrop or a text, not a gallery link, because a gallery with one photo in it looks like a gallery with nothing in it. The export settings that matter has the numbers for every other case.

05 · THE LINE

The line you draw

The sixty second routine is safe precisely because it stays at one. Say yes to one, send it with a sentence, "here is one for tonight, the full gallery is coming on the date in your contract", and stop. Two is a sneak peek set with its own rules; twenty is a delivery, and it deserves the cull and the edit. If sneak peeks are a service you want to offer, put a clause in the contract so the yes has a shape.

The card itself is the other job. Four thousand frames, and the first thing that happens to them is a cull. Kepla for Mac clears the obvious misses in minutes, on your machine, with a reason on every frame it sets aside, so the choosing you do next week starts from a clean set. Request Founding Access.

06 · COMMON QUESTIONS

FAQ

Do I have to import the card into Lightroom to get one JPG?

No. A browser based converter shows every frame on the card in seconds and writes a JPG from the one you choose, with no catalog and no import.

Should I edit the one photo before sending it?

Correct it if it needs it, exposure or white balance, and stop there. Style is the edit, and the edit is the delivery.

What size should a one off JPG be?

2048 pixels on the long edge at quality 90 for a phone. Small enough not to be printed, sharp enough to be loved.

Will the JPG carry GPS from the RAW?

Not from the Kepla converter; it writes camera, lens, exposure and date and never copies GPS.
