Narrative Select review (2026): an honest take

Narrative Select is the culling tool that feels like it was designed by someone who has actually sat in front of 3,000 wedding frames at midnight. The viewing experience is the best in the category. The pricing is where people get caught out, because the features this review praises are not on the cheapest plan. Here is the honest version.

The short version

Narrative Select is a desktop application for macOS and Windows. You point it at a folder of images, it reads every frame, and it tells you what it found: whether the subject is in focus, whether eyes are open or closed, and which frames belong to the same moment. When you are done, one click ships your picks to Lightroom Classic, Lightroom CC, Photoshop or Capture One. It handles the RAW formats you actually shoot, including CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, RW2 and DNG, plus JPG and HEIC.

The important thing to understand is the philosophy, because it decides whether you will like the product. Narrative does not hand you a finished selection. It hands you evidence and expects you to make every call yourself, just far faster than you could unaided. Aftershoot takes the opposite bet and gives you a proposed set of picks to audit. This review is not that comparison. It is about whether Narrative on its own is worth your money, and if so, on which plan.

The part that earns the money

Most culling software sells you speed of analysis. Narrative sells you speed of looking, and that turns out to be the thing that actually hurts on a long job.

The Close-Ups panel

This is the feature people stay for. On any frame with people in it, a side panel shows a magnified crop of each face, so you can see the one guest blinking in a row of twelve without zooming, dragging, and zooming back out. When there is no face, Narrative's Key Element Detection locks onto the subject instead, which covers detail shots, animals and rings. The practical effect is that group photos stop being the part of the wedding you dread. Checking eight faces takes a glance instead of eight zoom actions.

Scenes View

Narrative groups frames from the same moment into a scene and ranks them by sharpness, so the six near-identical versions of the aisle walk arrive together with the sharpest already surfaced. Comparing is much easier for human eyes than judging one frame in isolation, which is a large part of why picking photos is so hard in the first place.

No waiting for previews

Narrative's own product page claims you can import thousands of RAWs in seconds with no loading time between images. Treat any vendor speed claim with the usual caution, but the design intent is real and you feel it: the zoomed face crop is already there when you land on the frame, rather than resolving a second later. If your current workflow is Lightroom building 1:1 previews while you make coffee, this is the difference you will notice first.

What it actually costs

Which plan a culling buyer actually needs

This is the part that trips people up, so read it slowly. The four tiers are not four sizes of the same product. Culling capability changes once, between Lite and Standard, and after that you are paying for editing.

Lite, $10 a month annual. Fast culling with focus scores and one-click handoff to your editor. It does not include Scenes View or the Close-Ups panel. In other words, the two features that make Narrative worth writing about are not in it.

Standard, $20 a month annual. Advanced culling, Scenes View, Close-Ups panel. This is the real Narrative Select. If you are buying this tool for culling, this is your plan.

Premium and Ultra, $40 and $60 a month annual. Personal AI presets trained on your own editing, AI straightening, extra user seats. These are editing products with culling included. A solo photographer who only wants help choosing photos never needs them, and should not be talked into them.

So when you see Narrative and Aftershoot both quoted at $10 a month, know that it is not a like for like line. Aftershoot Select at $10 a month annual is $120 a year for its full culling feature set. Narrative Standard at $20 a month annual is $240 a year for its full culling feature set. Narrative may still be the one you want, and for group-heavy work I would understand it, but the honest number is double.

Four honest limits

It is desktop only

Narrative runs on your Mac or PC and nowhere else. The analysis is fast, but the work still cannot begin until you are home, at the desk, with the cards ingested. If your bottleneck is not analysis speed but the fact that you do not sit down until 10pm on a Sunday, this does not touch the problem. Aftershoot, FilterPixel and Photo Mechanic share the constraint. It is a property of the whole category, not a flaw in one app, and it is why people keep searching for a culling app for iPhone and iPad and finding thin results.

You still make every decision

Narrative accelerates judgement, it does not replace it. On a 3,000 frame wedding you will still touch every scene. That is the point of the design and plenty of photographers want exactly that, especially anyone who does not yet trust a model with their clients' faces. The tiers confuse people

Covered above, but it belongs on the limits list. A pricing page where the second cheapest plan is the one most buyers need, and the two most expensive plans are a different product category, produces a lot of buyer's remorse.

It is a subscription

You are renting. Stop paying and the workflow you built goes with it. At $240 a year on Standard that is roughly 8 percent of one average wedding booking, so it is rarely the deciding factor, but it is a real annual commitment. Who should buy it, and who should not

Buy Narrative Standard if:

• You shoot groups. Weddings, families, corporate events, anything where a frame fails because of one person's eyes. The Close-Ups panel has no real equal here.
• You want to stay the decision-maker and simply want the evidence delivered instantly.
• You edit in Capture One or Photoshop. Narrative ships to both, which is not universal in this category.
• Waiting for previews is the specific thing that makes culling feel slow to you.

Think twice if:

• You want the first pass done for you rather than made faster. That is a different product philosophy.
• You were sold on the $10 line. Lite is a real product, but it is not the one reviews are describing.
• You shoot a handful of jobs a year. A tight manual workflow and a set of good keyboard shortcuts may honestly be enough.
• Your real bottleneck is editing, not choosing. Culling is about 11 percent of a photographer's working time in a UK survey of 300 plus wedding photographers, against 55 percent for editing. Fix the bigger number first.
