Aftershoot vs Imagen AI vs Narrative Select: the honest comparison

Three tools dominate the AI culling conversation, and every comparison you'll find is written by one of them. This one isn't, Kepla's culling app has not shipped yet, so we have no dog in today's fight. What follows is the comparison we wanted when we started building: real published prices, the actual differences in how each tool thinks, and honest recommendations, including the cases where each competitor is simply the right buy.

If you only read one section

Aftershoot is the volume shooter's workhorse: flat subscription, unlimited images, desktop app that processes locally, and an AI that makes the picks for you. Narrative Select is the assistant that keeps you in charge: it grades focus, blinks and close-ups on every frame, then lets you decide fast. Imagen AI is really an editing company that also culls: you pay per photo, upload to the cloud, and buy a personalized editing profile more than a culling tool.

The spec sheets hide the real difference. Each product embodies a different answer to one question: who makes the final call on a photo?

Aftershoot: the AI decides, you audit

Aftershoot's Select product runs your whole shoot through its models, blinks, blur, duplicates, composition, and hands you a finished selection. Your job becomes review, not selection. It's a desktop app that processes on your machine, so RAW files never leave your drive, and every plan includes unlimited image processing, which matters enormously if you shoot the typical 2,000 to 4,000 frames per wedding day (a norm documented in platform data published by Snapeen). Aftershoot has also expanded into editing (Edit) and retouching (Retouch), sold separately or bundled.

Narrative Select: the AI informs, you decide

Narrative takes the opposite stance. Its Select app assesses every image, eyes closed, soft focus, a Close-Ups panel showing each face at 100%, and presents the evidence so you can fly through decisions without pixel-peeping. It's local-first, ships selections straight to Lightroom, Photoshop or Capture One, and all tiers include unlimited projects and images. Higher tiers add Scenes View, editing with core presets, and, on Premium and Ultra, custom AI presets trained on your own edits.

Imagen: editing first, culling included

Imagen built its business on personalized AI editing, a profile that learns your Lightroom adjustments, and added culling around it. It's cloud-based, so you upload previews before anything happens, and you pay per edited photo rather than a flat subscription. That single difference drives everything about who Imagen suits, as the math below shows.

What they actually cost

Two trial details worth knowing: Aftershoot gives a 30-day free trial with no card and lets you pause your subscription for up to 3 months a year, genuinely useful for seasonal shooters, while Narrative's free trial is a full trial of its top Ultra tier, also without a card.

Flat rate vs per photo: where the lines cross

Subscription vs per-photo is the decision most photographers get wrong, because they compare sticker prices instead of running their own volume. The arithmetic is short. At Imagen's pay-as-you-go rate of $0.05 per edited photo:

• 5,000 edited photos/year (roughly a part-timer's output) → $250/yr with Imagen. Cheaper than Aftershoot's Select+Edit combo at $480/yr annual, per-photo wins at low volume.
• 12,000 edited photos/year (say, 20 weddings at 600 delivered, inside the typical 400 to 800 delivered range) → $600/yr with Imagen. Now Aftershoot Complete at $540/yr is cheaper and includes retouching.
• 36,000 photos/year → about $0.0425/photo on Imagen's annual tier, roughly $1,530/yr. A flat-rate tool at $540/yr is now nearly a third of the price for the editing-and-culling job.

The pattern: per-photo pricing favors low and uncertain volume; flat subscriptions favor scale. Imagen's defenders will fairly point out that you're paying for a personalized editing profile, not just throughput, and Narrative's Premium tier ($40/mo annual) offers custom presets trained on your edits under a flat model. What none of the three can see

An honest comparison should admit what the whole category still gets wrong, because the vendors won't. All three tools are genuinely good at the mechanical layer: closed eyes, missed focus, duplicate bursts, blown exposure. That's most of the grunt work, and delegating it is rational.

What no model reliably sees is meaning. The frame where the bride's father looks away because he's crying. The technically soft image that's the only one of a grandmother laughing. The "worst" photo of the day that becomes the album cover. Every working photographer has delivered a picture an algorithm would have graded as a reject, which is why the sane workflow for all three tools is the same: let the AI do the first pass, then spend real (shorter) human time on the review, especially on the emotional peaks of the day. Tools differ in how gracefully they support that review, Narrative's whole design is the review; Aftershoot expects you to audit its output; Imagen expects you to check edits more than picks, but none of them replaces it. Honest recommendations

Pick Aftershoot if…

You shoot high volume, you're comfortable delegating the first pass entirely, and you want one vendor for culling, editing and retouching. The Complete bundle at $45/mo annual is the strongest all-in-one value of the three, the local processing means no upload wait, and the pause feature respects seasonal cash flow. This is the default pick for busy wedding photographers, and an honest comparison says so.

Pick Narrative Select if…

You've tried auto-culling and felt uneasy about what the AI might have discarded, a real concern we dig into in whether you can trust AI culling. Narrative's assessment-not-decision approach keeps your taste in the loop while still killing the pixel-peeping. It's also the gentlest entry point: Lite at $10/mo annual covers basic culling, and the Ultra trial lets you test everything free.

Pick Imagen if…

Editing is your actual bottleneck and you want a profile trained on your style, your volume is modest, or you'd rather pay for exactly what you use than commit to a subscription. Accept the trade-offs knowingly: uploads before culling, and per-photo costs that scale linearly with your success.
