
Every photo your phone takes writes down where you were standing, to within a few meters, and keeps that answer inside the file forever. Share the file and the coordinates travel with it. For a cafe photo that is trivia; for photos taken at home, at a school, or at a client’s house, it is an address you did not mean to hand out. Removing location data takes a minute once you know where it hides, and preventing it takes one settings change.
Inside a photo’s EXIF block, alongside the camera model and exposure settings, sit the GPS fields: latitude, longitude, often altitude, sometimes speed and compass direction, plus a timestamp. Precision is typically a few meters. Anyone with the file can read these fields in seconds; every desktop operating system will show them, and so will a free EXIF viewer.
Two things make the coordinates sharper than people expect. First, they compound: one photo says where you were once, but a camera roll shared over months maps your home, your job, your gym and your kid’s school by repetition. Second, they hide well: nothing about a JPG on a screen hints that it knows where it was born, so the leak feels invisible right up until someone looks.
Where it comes from is simple: phones ask for location permission for the camera and then geotag by default; most dedicated cameras do not have GPS, though some flagships and phone paired setups do. If your photos start life on a phone, assume they are tagged.

The operating systems offer partial routes too. Windows has Remove Properties and Personal Information in a file’s Properties dialog. macOS Photos can hide a photo’s location for shared items. On iPhone: Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services, Camera, then Never. From that moment no new photo carries coordinates. If you like geotags for your own library, keep them on and instead use the share sheet’s Options button, where location can be switched off per share.
On Android: open the Camera app settings and turn off location tags, or revoke the camera’s location permission in system settings. Wording varies by manufacturer, but every current Android exposes one of the two.
The middle path most photographers land on: record location for yourself, because it is genuinely useful for organizing years of work, and strip it at the point of sharing. Your library stays searchable by place while nothing that leaves your hands says where that place is. The habit costs one extra step per delivery, which the batch remover reduces to seconds.
Good news first: the big social platforms, Instagram, Facebook, X and most forums, strip EXIF including GPS from images they republish. The version of your photo strangers see on Instagram does not carry coordinates, though the platform itself read them on the way in and may use them.
The traps are the routes that feel private. Email attachments keep everything. Messaging apps vary: some strip on default image sends, but sending as a document or original quality file usually preserves the full metadata block. Cloud drive shares and transfer links move the file itself, metadata included, because faithfully preserving your file is their whole job. So the sends that go to one specific person, the ones that feel safest, are exactly the ones that carry the coordinates.
The rule that covers every case without needing this paragraph memorized: if the file leaves you as a file, strip it first. It takes seconds, the pixels are identical, and nothing that arrives can say where it came from.
